Matthew Stafford out duels Drake Maye as the Los Angeles Rams defeat the New England Patriots 28-22 on Sunday at Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
After trailing by seven entering the 2nd quarter, Stafford would find Cooper Kupp for a 5-yard touchdown to tie the game. Then, on his very next pass, Stafford would connect with Puka Nacua from 12-yards out to take a 14-7 lead.
New England then responded with a 9-play 57-yard drive that was capped off by a 32-yard field goal from Joey Slye and went into halftime down by 4.
On the Rams opening possession in the 3rd quarter, Matthew Stafford found Cooper Kupp yet again this time for a 62-yard score, which extended the LA lead to 21-10.
Then, following another Patriots’ field goal, Stafford completed his 4th touchdown pass of the game as Colby Parkinson beat his defender and caught the ball from 19-yards out increasing the Rams lead to 15.
The Patriots then went on back-to-back scoring drives, one a TD pass from Drake Maye to Vederian Lowe and another a 42-yard field goal from Joey Slye, to make it a one score game.
After holding the Rams out of field goal range and forcing a punt, New England had a chance to steal the game late.
Following a sack, Drake Maye would drop back and throw a deep pass intended for DeMario Douglas, but there seemed to be miscommunication, and the ball was picked off by Kamren Kitchens to seal the game for the Rams.
In this win, the Los Angeles Rams were led by their QB, Matthew Stafford, who was able to dice the Patriots’ defense. Stafford totaled for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns on 18/27 passing attempts.
The receiving duo of Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua was also spectacular for the Rams, as they evaded the New England secondary. Kupp recorded 106 yards and 2 TDs on 6 receptions, while Nacua gathered 123 yards and a TD on 7 receptions.
On the Rams defense, rookie Braden Fiske kept Drake Maye from gaining comfort in the pocket as he rushed the QB. Fiske compiled 3 total tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 TFLs as he was a headache for the Patriots’ pass protection.
Quetin Lake led the Rams in tackles completing a total of 11 with a pass deflection. Kamren Kitchens added 6 total tackles, a pass deflection, and caught the game winning interception.
For New England, Drake Maye led the offense, while having one of his best games in his young career. Maye recorded 282 passing yards with 2 TDs and an interception on 30/40 pass attempts.
Kendrick Bourne, who was a healthy scratch last week, caught 5 passes for 70 yards and a TD. Hunter Henry added 63 yards on 6 receptions.
DeMario Douglas gathered 5 receptions for 59 yards. Rhamondre Stevenson totaled 73 yards on the ground on 20 carries.
With this win, the Los Angeles Rams moved to 5-5 and have won 3 of their last 4 games. On the other hand, the New England Patriots fell to 3-8 and failed to win back-to-back games.
Despite a Set of Returns, Patriots Fall After Questionable Decision
For the first time this season, New England Patriots were able to play with their standout defensive tackle, Christian Barmore. In July, Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots and has been out all year.
In his debut this week, Christian Barmore recorded three total tackles against the Los Angeles Rams.
“Blood clots is not a joke,” said Christian Barmore. “I had really bad shortness of breath. It messed with me a lot. Mentally, I had my teammates, my medical team.”
“My teammates really support the hell out of me, and I love them all. Coaches and all,” said Barmore. “I told myself I wasn’t going to lose that battle.”
Though Barmore only played 21 snaps in his return to the field, he believes he is in good physical condition, so one could look for him to play more in the upcoming weeks.
“I felt good. I’m still trying to get into game shape, but I’m still good,” said Christian Barmore. “Really just keep grinding and keep doing extra work, especially [since] stuff is out of my lungs. Thank God. Just keep grinding, but I feel really good.”
Along with the return of Christian Barmore, Kyle Dugger also returned to the Patriots’ defense. Dugger has been out the past three weeks with an ankle injury and was a staple on defense prior to the injury.
In light of New England receiving two major returns on defense, they made a huge questionable decision that may have cost them the game.
For much of the game, star corner, Christian Gonzalez, did not line up against Cooper Kupp or Puka Nacua. Gonzalez only shadowed Kupp or Nacua for 9 passing snaps and allowed three receptions on five targets for 19 yards.
“The coaches came in and told me what the gameplan was,” said Christian Gonzalez. “I never look at it as surprised or upset. I’m doing what they want me to do. Whatever they tell me to do, I’m going to go out there and do my best to do [it].”
When not covered by Gonzalez, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua combined for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns.
