The New England Patriots 15-game winning streak against the Jets ends as Breece Hall runs for 178 yards to push New York over New England 17-3 at Gilette Stadium on Sunday.
The Patriots trailed 9-3 in the closing minutes of the game when Bailey Zappe threw back-to-back interceptions to put New England’s chances out of reach. Two plays later, Breece Hall would follow up with a 50-yard touchdown run to score the lone TD of the game and shut the door on the Patriots’ season.
Breece Hall led the charge for the troubled Jets offense by totaling for 190 yards and scoring the game’s only touchdown. With this performance, Hall falls short of a 1,000-yard rushing season with 994 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Trevor Siemen threw for 70 yards on 8/20 passing. Garrett Wilson added 2 receptions for 34 yards.
The New York Jets also received a stellar performance from the defense who only manage to give up 3 points. The Jets held to Patriots offense to 119 total yards and 6 first downs.
Quinnen Williams recorded three total tackles with two sacks. Ashtyn Davis and Tony Adams both gathered an interception.
With this win, the Jets go into the offseason with a victory and defeat the Patriots for the first time since Dec. 25, 2015.
Struggles in the Season Finale
The New England Patriots long-lasting issues were in full in what could be Bill Belichick last game with the organization, as the Patriots turned the ball over twice and failed to get in the endzone. New England struggled to move the ball against the tough Jets’ defense by only recording 6 first downs on 15 drives.
Bailey Zappe threw for 88 yards on 12/30 passing and 2 interceptions. Zappe has thrown five interceptions in the past two weeks and eight interceptions throughout the season.
“For me, I was just trying to win,” said Bailey Zappe. “Didn’t do enough obviously. This is the last one. Got to go back to the drawing board in the offseason and get ready for next year”.
Ezekiel Elliott ran for 54 yards on 13 attempts. Jalen Reagor added one reception for 33 yards.
With the future of the New England Patriots still looming, this loss is an important one and could dictate offseason decisions. The tenure of Bill Belichick has been in question since the Patriots loss against the Colts earlier this season.
After the game, Bill Belichick insisted that he would only answer questions about the game and leave discussions about what the future would hold when he meets with Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft in the offseason.
This loss to the New York Jets secures the Patriots a top three draft selection in the upcoming NFL Draft. If the Washington Commanders defeat the Dallas Cowboys later today, then the Patriots will jump up to the 2nd overall pick.
