The New England Patriots end their 3-game losing streaking by defeating the Buffalo Bills 29-25 to earn Bill Belichick 300th career regular season win.
New England led 22-17 midway through the 4th quarter when Kendrick Bourne fumbled on the NE 29-yard line and Buffalo’s Terrel Bernard recovered the ball giving the Bills great field position. Shortly after, Josh Allen would rush into the endzone to give Buffalo a 25-22 lead with 1:58 remaining.
Mac Jones would then march the Patriots 74 yards down the field to set up a 1-yard TD pass to Mike Gesicki to win their 2nd game of the season.
With this victory, the Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills for the 1st time since December 12, 2021.
Return of the Mac(k) and the Patriots’ Offense
Mac Jones arguably played his best game since being drafted in 2021 against a tough Bills team. Jones was very efficient throwing for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns on 25/30. He managed to play turnover free, which has been an issue thus far this season, and threw the game winning touchdown.
“I thought Mac did a great job today,” said David Andrews. “Making the right decisions all day and then [the] big drive at the end. Playing his best football when it mattered and that’s what we need”.
The New England offense has been rejuvenated over the past two weeks after putting up three total points against the Cowboys and Saints. This week the Patriots totaled for 364 yards and scored over 20 points for the first time this season.
“It was one of our most consistent offensive performances this year,” said Bill Belichick. “We moved the ball, we scored points, we changed field position”.
New England received an uptick in performance for several key playmakers on offense. Rookie receiver Demario Douglas continues to impress as he recorded 4 receptions for 56 yards and gained 20 rushing yards on a carry.
Kendrick Bourne has shaped himself out to be a go-to receiver for Mac Jones, as he tallied 6 receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. This comes after his 10 catches for 89 yards performance last week.
Defense Remains Solid
The New England Patriot’s defense continued their consistent play against a Bills’ offense that has scored over 30 points 3 times this season. The defense held the Bills to 25 points, while having many key players out due to injury.
The Patriots have been able to take away the opponent’s top target well so far this season. This week they held Stefon Diggs to 6 receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. In the past four weeks, Diggs has recorded 32 catches for 452 yards and 4 touchdowns.
“[We are] definitely missing [Matthew Judon] right now, but its always a next man up mentality,” said Jabrill Peppers. “We’ve got a lot of capable guys, and they work hard and they align and execute”.
Jabrill Peppers has established himself as a playmaker on defense in the past several weeks. He intercepted Josh Allen’s first pass of the game and added 9 total tackles with a pass deflection.
“[Peppers] has had a good year. Very explosive player, hard tackler, big play on the interception,” said Bill Belichick. “Pepps has been good for us”.
Kyle Dugger and Ja’Whaun Bentley also played important roles in the victory over the Bills. They combined for 16 total tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass deflection.
